This is a basic granola recipe that I found in an free menu planning ebook I got from the Schoolhouse Store. I think it allows for a lot of  adjustments for taste by adding nuts, dried fruits, coconut – whatever appeals to you!

Yummy Homemade Granola

  • 1 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 8 cups oatmeal (quick oats)

In a large, 4-quart saucepan, melt the margarine or butter and the brown sugar
together. Stir it up and let it simmer for a few minutes (2-3 minutes). Add the salt and
cinnamon, then the oatmeal. Remove pot from heat and stir until all the oatmeal is
coated. Spread the granola onto 2 cookie sheets (with sides) and bake at 375° for 10
minutes, until golden brown. Cool granola completely on pan, then break up into pieces
and transfer to an airtight container.

  1. Thanks for sharing the recipe Amy. Do you need to reduce the oats if you add nuts or fruit? Do you know if you could score it while hot so it would break into bars?

  2. Tabitha,
I don’t know as I just tried this yesterday and I never deviate from the recipe the first time. I’ll let you know next time I make a batch what happens.
Also I did see a recipe for Granola bars on Allrecipes.com but I haven’t tried it yet. 🙂
    Amy
