I can’t tell how much I hate when my kids get a birthday invitation.  And, when their own birthdays come around – I just want to hide away until they are over.  We are not rich.  And, even if we were not – the current trends in birthday parties for children just does not sit right with me.

This article reminds me of this article at TOS by Jen Igarashi:  How to Make a Monster in Three Easy Steps.
What do you all think about birthdays?  Are you like me – a “bad” mommy who refuses to  succumb to the hoopla?  Or do you go all out?

    Hey Amy,

Just to let you know, birthdays aren’t about the parties! Remind me to tell you about my birthday last yeara at knitting tomorrow! LOL!

  2. Amy, loved the articles! No way are you a “bad” mommy! You definitely sound like you have your priorities straight.

I know I don’t go all out, but that’s due to several reasons, one of which is he’s only 2, so he doesn’t really know the difference, so I’m off the hook for a little longer. 😉 One set of grandparents, though, goes completely insane on spending, while the other four (we have steps and exes), let’s just say we’re lucky if they remember his birthday at all, much less send a card or gift. How will we explain that to him when he’s older?

I am guessing we will probably not host or attend parties once he’s old enough to know about that stuff and start asking us questions. Although, what to tell him about declining an invite? Hmmm. I have no clue! 🙂 You’ll have to tell me what you do with your kids.

Maybe I’ll try to steer him towards friends whose parents have a philosphy similar to mine (keep it simple, birthdays are for family time and appreciating the birthday-boy coming into your life, and getting stuff is not the object).

  3. I’m a “bad” Mommy like you! :o)
